James D. Carlson, BSPharm, PharmD
James D. Carlson, PharmD, is a pharmaceutical executive, clinical research leader, and entrepreneur with over four decades of experience spanning academic pharmacy, drug development, and clinical research operations.
Dr. Carlson earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Iowa (1971), a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Michigan (1976), and completed a Clinical Pharmacy Residency at Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo, New York. He began his career in academia as an Assistant and Associate Professor at North Dakota State University College of Pharmacy, teaching clinical pharmacy and clinical pharmacokinetics.
He is currently Co‑Founder and Senior Partner of Agassiz Clinical Research Partners, LLC in Fargo, North Dakota (2025–Present). Throughout his career, Dr. Carlson has founded, led, and advised multiple clinical research organizations (CROs) and pharmaceutical companies, helping drive scientific strategy, operational growth, and regulatory alignment.
His leadership roles include Vice President of New Product Scientific Development at Reven Pharmaceuticals (2019–2022); Scientific Advisor to AXIS Clinical Research–US (2014–2025); and President of Algorithme Clinical Research–US (2014–2017). Dr. Carlson was Co‑Founder, CEO, and Owner of PRACS Institute, Ltd., a 650‑bed full‑service CRO operating from 1983 to 2006, before selling his holdings to create Cetero Research.
Dr. Carlson also founded Retain Pharmacy Solutions (2005–2025), focused on research drug retention materials, and has been active in life sciences investment and business development, including service on the board of the Linn Grove Angel Fund (2008–2022). He maintains additional business interests through JDC Development and as a silent partner in Paul Bunyan Tree Service.
An author of more than 70 publications, Dr. Carlson has been widely recognized for his contributions to pharmacy, research innovation, and entrepreneurship. His honors include North Dakota Business Innovator of the Year, Ernst & Young Regional Entrepreneur of the Year in Life Sciences, Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Iowa, and numerous professional awards. His most cherished recognition is The CEO Award, presented by the staff of PRACS Institute for leadership, vision, and commitment to organizational excellence.
